Low budget ideas

A-Ha! Imogen Heap

Mise en scene

As you notice from the chosen shots the lighting is very dark which is very effective for this genre of music, it is very ''emo'' type music so the dark lighting and the bright red blood work really well together, the props used are also to a good effect as you can see we have the chains in the bottom picture which yet again links up well with the music genre.
With the way this mise en scene has been presented it has made the video very successful and this is very inspirational for my ideas as from this I can use the aspects of the mise en scene I like and transfer them over such as getting the correct lighting for the genre I choose to do.

Editing

The editing in these clips is very fast paced with straight cuts, this yet again works really well and something I will have to consider with the music video I choose to do, for example in this video the cuts are extremely quick so I will have to get the right timing for the genre I choose to fit the pace of the lyrics which this video has done really well.

Sound

With the sound in this video all we hear is non-diegetic sound, this is good as all we can hear is the artist so this works well with the genre of the video as it is very dark and gloomy. With the genre I choose I will have to choose wether I want the singer and band to be heard or to find a song with diegetic sound in such as people talking in the background, having the noise of the band set up or haveing the wind blow at the start but this mainly depends on the genre I choose and if it fits the music video.

Cinematography

Finally, with this micro element in this video mostly close ups and a few mid shots are used, now this works well with this genre and works well with the lyrics however I do not feel that I will follow this same route because I do strongly feel this video although brilliant lacks creativity. I feel with my video if I use a wide variety of shot types it will look good and to have it go along well with the actual song will make it stand out.

The Fix ''Just Got Paid''

Mise en scene

As you can see from the mise en scene the costumes they wear work fantastically with the song, they all wear suits which works well as they are in a band and all look the same but also the clothes they wear are very linked up to the lyrics of the video and thus come of well, they are always presented in the middle of the shot which is good as it makes them look a lot more professional and also the lighting used for each shots works well as well as it is using a wide variety. They also change outfits during the video from being in suits to a casual T-Shirt which makes it look as if they put a lot of effort into it going that extra mile. These are all key elements of a successful music video and I will consider using certain elements in the video for my work.

Editing

Compared to the previous video that I looked at the cuts are at a slower pace although still quite fast which works well for this video being of the pop genre, they had the right balance which will be an important part of my video as the cuts need to be perfect and of the right time to give the best effect possible, something that this video does. The one bad thing about the editing in this is that I feel it could of used a few jump cuts using more locations a a few shots not just of the band.

Cinematography

The shot types in this music video is what I think worked the best for them, this is because it has a very wide variety such as pans, mid shots, long shots, close ups, wide shots etc., this worked really well and something I want to do in my music video, with a wide variety it keeps things very interesting and is what made this in my opinion stand out a lot more than the previous one.

Analysis of Rock Video 4

Ruby

Sound

The sound in this music video is very conventional for the rock genre, in it you can hear the singer and the other band members of their instruments, this is the most crucial part for obvious reasons to a music video, the fact that every member is heard performing their part I think is very good. The audio is very fast paced for a rock video and very conventional which I think works well.

Editing

The editing of this music video is very fast paced as you would expect from a conventional rock video, the cuts are quick paced to suit the sound which works well and is typical of this genre, only cuts are used so that shots gone from one to the other very quickly and sticks to the the conventions of the genre.

Performance

From this clip you get a very clear view in the performance of the band members, similar to the previous video Castle of Glass they are not jumping around like pop vidoes but still upbeat, they don't move much and are often seen staying still playing their instruments or singing into the microphone which I feel is very good for this genre and a lot more effective than them acting like a pop group.

Cinematography

This medium shot of the lead singing is a very conventional thing and very good for a music video too have, this is so it is established who the lead singing is and create a link so the audience know this music belongs to this person. Having this close up lets us get a view of what the singer looks like and helps promote the band.
This is also another shot, this low angle shot makes the band look a lot bigger than what they are and works really well with the small buildings around them, it comes off as more effective and gives the illusion that they are better than everybody else around them which I think is really good of a music video to do.
This final shot is one of the most important f not the most important for a music video, this is because every member in the band is established and presented to the audience together showing who they are and what they are playing as their role in the band, this shot I feel is great because of this and something that will defiantly be in my video as it is very conventional.

Mise en scene

The mise en scene in these two shots are very conventional, to start with throughout the video the band members are shown to be in the middle of the shot so that the focus is on them. This is very important and something I will have in my music video as it keeps the attention focused on the performers by having them centered. Next up like most videos of the rock genre they are wearing similar clothes which is important as it shows that they are together. Next up we see all of their instruments which is imortanjt so we know who is doing what in the band and establish the lead singer. Finally the location is very conventional for a rock video, similar to the rock video Castle of Glass they are out in the of the way of civialisation and even when they are near it as shown by the picture to the right they are bigger than society physically so this is very effective and very conventional of a music video.

Analysis of Rock Video 3

Castle of Glass

Sound

The audio in this video starts of very slow with no diegetic sound and is all non-diegetic, it builds up at the start like most videos and then develops into a fast pace, this is very conventional of a rock video and I feel is a very good aspect of them as it comes off as more effective and suits the build up of the pace within the video. We hear the singer himself singing along with the band in the background which is obviously important to have in a music video. They start of playing slow and build up to a fast pace.

Cinematography

These are very good shots for the cinematography of a rock video, the first one we have is a medium close up of the lead singer, this works very well as it is showing the audience the singer of the band and making him the main focus as he is put in front of the best of the band and also he is in focus whilst the others are not so this shot works very well.

This wide shot/long shot of the band is very conventional for a rock band video and works very well, this is because it captures all the members of the band in one shot and makes them the main focus which is an important thing to do. This shot type is great for presenting the band to the audience and making them recognisable

This shot is also very conventional of a rock band video, this is because it is a single shot of one of the members who is not a singer but playing a different role in the band which in this case is the drums. This is a good shot for a rock video as it is keeping all members of the band in the audiences mind and also the high angle used here captures him well as high angles are meant to make people look alone so with this shot type and this song together it becomes a very powerful shot.

Mise en scene

This shot captures the mise en scene at its best, this is a very conventional shot for a rock video, in this shot we have to start with all the members of the band, the instruments and the setting. To start with what the band is wearing is very good and very conventional, this is because they all wear very dark clothes and of a similar style. This shows that they are united and part of the same group which is very conventional and something I think is very good.
You can also from the mise en scene see everyone's instruments, I think to have this in the mise en scene is very important and very conventional, this is so that the members roles are established and you can see clearly who is doing what, also the audience is able to see where the sound is coming from which I think is also important but also the more obvious is that everyone is playing an instrument with the one singer which is good too capture in the mise en
scene.
Finally we have the setting, in this particular shot the setting is very dark and gloomy which is is the opposite to the shots in the real world where everything is more warmer so these shots could reflect how the boy is feeling inside once he finds out the tragic news in this music video. This is a very good part of the music video as it becomes more powerful on many levels and is contrasts really well.

Editing

The editing in this rock music video is very conventional of this genre and very effective as it is fast aced with shots sometimes lasting less than a second which becomes very effective as we are being shown all this different images in a short amount of time which is keeping us hooked into watching it and also the fast pace is matching the quick pace of the song itself so those two combined become very effective. Normal cuts are used with no transitions so that the shots can go by at a quick pace.

Performance

The performance is very conventional for a rock music video, they are not all energetic compared to pop music videos but are not are dark and down like slip-not music, it has a balance to it and they perform to the mood of the song, this is very effective and something I think works really well in music videos.

Analysis of pop videos 2

Sound

In this music video it starts of similar to the One Direction one in the previous analysis but builds up into a fast paced song, it is low toned at first but at 0:36 the pace kicks in and everything from being low and won becomes very upbeat and exciting, this is a great use of sound in this music video as you have the background noise from the instruments and the singer in sync which works well, the sound fits in well with the video as the video builds up with the sound and then releases at 0:36 where you notice a massive change, it very energetic and makes this video brilliant for this genre as it has the correct requirements for a pop genre.

Love Me Again

Cinematography

This is a good for for this video to use as it is setting the scene for the audience to get a good idea of what is going on, this high angle long shot shows us people haveing fun and danceing with joy to the music which works really well as this is a up beat pop song.

These two shots here are very similar although hey are different shows, the first one is a close up used to identify the ginger whilst the second one is a low angle shot used to show him singing and to identify him to the audience, This is so the audience know who the singer is and create a link between him and this song, these shots work well as the establish him well to the audience which is an important requirement for a music video and also make him the main focus and not let him become drowned out by the cut aways which is also very important and what makes the such a good music video.

Mise en scene/performance

With this clip you get a clear view of the mise scene hear and how they perform, the people the singer is smartly dressed  whilst the people on the dance floor are wearing party type clothes. This is to show the audience and give them a clear concept on what type of music video this is, the performers are also very active by dancing to this high paced music on the dance floor, this is very good in showing what this video is all about, by peole being active and not all just sitting about we get this sense of enjoyment as people are having fun with others which reflects well with the music video and the song in the background.
This is a good example of the mise en scene, you have the boy and girl look into each others eyes, the girl gives an awkward smile it seems at first but the boy remains confident and keeps looking rather than looking down at the floor, because of these two particular shots we know from this that something is going to happen between these two performers and it adds to the excitment of the video as we then wonder what is going to happen next between these two people, this is great for this style video as it adds to the excitement and we from here on are expecting them two to get together and be happy which reflects a pop video well as it is a about creating a happy atmosphere. Also they are both wearing dark colours which could suggest they are outcasts to society and yet they find each other and are happy.

Editing

The editing in this clip is a perfect example of what a pop music video should be like, it cuts between the performances and singer on a regular basis at a fast past and also cuts to the beat of the music on occasions which gives a good effect, this works really well as these conventions used help build the video up and make it fit more together with the fast aced song. The song uses simple cuts which work very effective as it makes it quicker to get from one shot to another keeping the pace high and putting something fresh in your mind.

Analysis of Pop Videos 1

One Direction - What Makes You Beautiful

Sound

The sound in this music video is very up beat as it is a pop music video, it features 5 separate singers and the sound is very up beat and exciting for most viewers, this song is being sang to girls who don't know their ''beautiful'' so you could say this pop song is mainly aimed at young girls around the age 12-17. Their voices are very high and thus makes it seem more appealing to younger girls who are interested in boy pop bands and thus would not apeal at all to the typical emo girl or stereotypical boy.

Cinematography

This is a good shot for the cinematography as it presents one of the singers to the the audience, this close up allows the audience to recognize the singer with the song and thus create a link between the two, this is good as a key element of a music video is to establish the singers early one and this comes within the first 15 seconds.

This is a good establishing shot used as it presents the scenery well and you get an idea of the type of location from this, this shot also ties in well with the mise en scene as it tells the audience the song is set on a beach which is a place often filed with joy so you know from this shot that the song is going to be quite up beat.
This is another good shot used in this music video, this is because it is establishing the audience with the group of singers, this shot shows all the members of the band which is good as this is a key element for a successful music video so the audience can see that this is their work, this shot again ties with the mise en scene as we are shown the clothes they are wearing, in this case they are very casual clothes and very summery and with the bright blue background you know this is going to be an upbeat song as the wide shot gets a huge view point of the location and helps set the scene very early on.

Mise en scene

To start with for the mise en scene we have a shot of a girl, she wears a summer dress and has her arms out as if she is having a blast, this has been done so that the meise en scene gets accross the point that fun is being had in this music video and to go with the lyrics which is talking about beautiful girls so they put one in the music video to relate to the lyrics but also of a rough age of who this song is being aimed at and in this case the girl looks about 17 so it works well as it is identifying the audience.

This is one of the best shots for mise en scene in this pop video, this is because you can see hear everyone is haveing a great time, one of them has a ball, their in summer cloths juming over a fallen tree at the beach with both boys and girls their so it is as if their getting ready to party on the beach or on a day out, no adults are present here which suggests that this is a teen only video as it is their audience and also this music is meant to be for girls that enjoy having fun which is what these people in the video are doing, you have clear skies in the image which indicate it is a warm day and they have a lot of fun installed for them which is what this video is trying to get across as it is for those lively teens and not those that stay home all day. The shot works very well as it is getting a lot across and just by seeing an image like this you could guess the music genre.

This final image for the mise en scene is really good for this music video, this is because you have all the members present so without the music you would know who is singing this song, they are up high some hanging on the sides and look like they are having fun, this is great for a pop video as the whole point of one is to make it seem as if everyone is having fun here to attract its audience

Editing

This is a tube chop of the music video from 1:06-1:15, the cuts in the music video are very fast paced, this is reflected here by the quick cuts in this footage, this is because quick cuts are used to make things seem a lot more happier and more lively which is reflected here in this footage as in these cuts it shows everyone being happy and getting ready to have some fun on the beach, these quick cuts work great for the genre as it reinforces the point of everyone being happy.

Performance

This clip shown above is a great example of the type of performance that should be used in this type of music genre, in it we see everybody having fun and running about which is very effective with this music video as the music itself is very happy and upbeat so this is reflective well in the performance which makes this pop video very good as it follows typical conventions and thus stands out a lot more for doing this, if the performance had been mellow it would of made a poor video as the music is too up beat and happy so seeing people having fun worked really well. Transitions are also used on a regular basis at the start which adds to a very peaceful effect as it is quite slow and calm before the real pace kicks in and adds a great effect on the video which suits the style of the pop group

Brief

The task I shall be completing is to create a promotion package for the release of an album, this will involve planning, analyzing music videos and the creation of a CD cover and a magazine advertisement.
